Renowned American television journalist and co-anchor of ABC’s 20/20 Elizabeth Vargas recently joined other celebrities in talking about her struggles with substance abuse and the need to end stigma associated with addiction and mental illnesses. The veteran journalist was recently interviewed by PEOPLE where she revealed that writing her autobiography with details of her multiple relapses and the way she felt after hitting rock bottom was extremely difficult, yet a rewarding experience. While writing “Between Breaths: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction” that released in 2016, she had talked about her devastating addiction for the first time.
Vargas has been brutally honest about her struggles with anxiety and self-medicating behavior using alcohol. She shared that she was first hit by panic attack at the age of six when her father was posted in Vietnam. She cried and pleaded every day to her mother not to leave her alone but unfortunately, Vargas did not receive the required help as not much attention was paid to children of men going to the war. As she grew older, she started to feel ashamed of her condition and chose to drink alcohol to numb the pain. When she got introduced to wine in her first job, it helped her calm down. She could relax and felt at ease. Over the next couple of years, she abused alcohol to gain a sense of security and peace. Gradually, her habit worsened after the birth of her son and slowly it consumed her life in devastating ways.
Eventually, once she gained a clear understanding about her problem, Vargas decided to attain recovery and won the battle by taking help from a rehab facility. She feels proud that she handled the most difficult phase of her life and is now helping others.
From being a sufferer to an inspiration
Currently hosting the “A&E Investigates” while working on several new documentary programs, Vargas is making public appearances and delivering speeches with an aim to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction and mental health.
Vargas is extremely passionate about helping others dealing with pain. But she also makes sure that she doesn’t lose sight of her sobriety and continues leading a healthy life. Vargas accepts that she does not take her life goals for granted and makes sure to follow the recovery program religiously.
