Gala celebrations, exciting programs, family get-togethers and glittery fireworks mark the U.S. Independence Day on July 4. However, amid all these festivities, federal bodies and safety authorities are bogged down by a different concern – handling driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), a common problem encountered on the Independence Day. Therefore, in order to protect their lives and keep them safe, the American Automobile Association (AAA) Northern California has come up with an innovative plan. The non-profit organization that offers a range of automotive, travel, insurance and financial services has decided to offer free tows on the Independence Day. This initiative has been taken to protect the partygoers from driving in a drunken state.
Substantiating the need of implementing this plan, Michael Blasky, spokesman for AAA Northern California, said, “Increased traffic combined with celebrations that commonly involve alcohol makes the Fourth of July one of the most dangerous days on the road of the year.” Adding further, he said that the aim is to make the drivers think twice before they plan to drive in an intoxicated state. This can be done by offering them a service that they can rely on when stuck in a dangerous situation.
Offering a free 10-mile tow and ride home service for a driver and one passenger, the program will charge a standard towing rate from the motorists beyond 10 miles. However, this program won’t include any service for roadside assistance. The program has been implemented for the entire Northern California region and will be available from 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 3 through 6 a.m. Wednesday, July 4. What’s even more impressive is that the service has been made available for all and not just the members of AAA.
Sober driving can curb alcohol-related fatalities
The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that approximately 29 people died every day due to alcohol-impaired vehicle crashes in 2016. This comes to around one person in every 50 minutes. Claiming more than 10,000 lives per year, drunk driving clashes have become a menace to the society. People who drive under the influence of alcohol not only pose danger to their own lives but also to other people. Therefore, it is important for every individual to stay responsible towards themselves as well as the society at large so that their problem of drinking does not prove hazardous to anyone.
It is the responsibility of the motorists to ensure that they follow the necessary sober driving tips to curb the number of alcohol-related fatalities. Some of the common tips to stay safe when co-passengers consume alcohol include fastening the seat belts and avoiding distractions from co-passengers or mobile phones. In case, a person consumes alcohol and has to drive a car back home, it is recommended not to do so. Either request someone else for a ride or get public transport to reach back safely.
